Plenary Sessions

A. The first session at Seoul City Hall is open to the public and special lectures will be delivered by the two invited speakers – Bill Hiller, the initiator of Space Syntax, and Dominique Perrault, a world-renowned architect – under the theme of 'Toward Urban Integration', which is also the theme of 'Seoul Urban Design 2013-international ideas competition for students.'

B. The plenary sessions 1 & 2 at Seoul History Museum will start by an opening lecture by Alan Penn under the title of 'The City, Humanity and Science', followed by 6 other keynote speakers on the two chosen themes of 'Spatial Culture of East Asian Cities' and 'The Science of Cities.' They are:

- Spatial Culture of East Asian Cities: Young Ook Kim, Renee Y Chow, Masao Furuyama
- The Science of Cities: Hawoong Jeong, Marc Barthelemy, Juval Portugali

C. In the panel discussion time at Seoul City Hall (annex), the four invited speakers – Bill Hillier, Dominique Perrault, Renee Y Chow, Juval Portugali - will sit at the same table and share their knowledge and expertise in discussing the various issues of urbanity and architecture (Modulator: Alan Penn).

D. The plenary session 3 at Sejong University will be devoted to the symposium theme of 'Spatial Cognition & Behaviour' and three selected papers will be presented for this purpose (Chair: Jean Wineman).

E. The plenary session 4 at Sejong University is a closing session, in which John Peponis will deliver a special lecture on 'Space Syntax: Progress and Prospects', in a way to lead a short panel discussion with young scholars.

More details on the speakers and their presentations can be found at the Invited Speakers and Proceedings pages.

Parallel Sessions

The plenary sessions above are planned to stimulate the active development of parallel sessions on the 8 symposium themes. All parallel sessions will take place at Sejong University on 2-3 November. Each parallel session will comprise five thematic sessions, in each of which three long papers will be presented with short question times. There are 30 such parallel sessions in total and you can download a detailed session program here.

Workshops

There will be two workshop programs starting from 09:30 at Seoul City Hall (8F) on 31 October. These workshops are open only to those who registered. You can also register on-site at the reception.

A. Space Syntax Software Workshop

Titled as "From DepthmapX for Dummies to Introduction to Computation for Space Syntax", this workshop will begin with the "DepthmapX for Dummies" and continue with "Introduction to Computational Space Syntax". The later part will deal mainly with a very basic introduction to Processing and Python script environments, but it is also intended for 'dummies' to follow easily. All participants are expected to bring their own laptops on which 'DethmapX' (http://lab.space.bartlett.ucl.ac.uk/files/) and 'Processing' (http://processing.org) are installed. The first-time users of DepthmapX need to download the QT libraries files first.

- Co-Chairs: Akkie Van Nes (Delft University of Technology, Netherlands), Tasos Varoudis (UCL, UK, the developer of 'DepthmapX').

B. Space Syntax Teaching & Researching Workshop

Teaching space syntax can mean a wide range of things, spanning from introducing core ideas, to teaching how to do operative analysis, to theory, to integrated design work. But it also reaches much further than initial introductions, lectures, and exercises into PhD training and even further. This workshop will begin with a focus on the former, but also explore how space syntax knowledge can be taught in various ways, for various audiences, with various aims. To start the workshop, a few presentations will be given by researchers with long experience in teaching space syntax, giving some different perspectives on pedagogical challenges and methods, followed by a commentary and discussion on these presentations. As the workshop continues, it will move more and more towards an open-ended round-table on the topics how, what, and why of 'space syntax pedagogy'.

- Chair and Presenter: Daniel Koch (KTH, Sweden)
- Presenters: Ayse Sema Kubat (Istanbul Technical University, Turkey), Sophia Psarra (UCL, UK)
- Commentary and reflections: Kayvan Karimi (UCL, UK)

Poster Session

There will be various official and unofficial activities arranged during the poster session, 17:30-18:30 at Sejong University, which include:

A. Poster Exhibition

All short papers will be presented through poster exhibition and you can have Q&A time with the authors in a more personal atmosphere. The poster exhibition itself will continue for the last two days at the lobby space.

B. Space syntax analysis with free open source tools: QGIS and DepthmapX

In this demonstration session, Jorge Gil (UCL, UK) will introduce the use of QGIS as an open source GIS platform for spatial analysis, and demonstrate its operation in conjunction with DepthmapX to carry out the usual tasks of space syntax analysis. After a brief overview of QGIS and its capabilities, he will demonstrate how it can be used to support space syntax analysis, in terms of data preparation, visualisation and analysis of the results.

The session is aimed at those interested in conducting space syntax analysis using GIS, with previous knowledge of space syntax theory and methods, and experience of DepthmapX. For us it will be an opportunity to introduce the project of integrating and expanding these software platform's capabilities, getting feedback from the wider space syntax community.

C. Space Syntax for Generative Design: On the Application of a New Tool

In this demonstration session, Richard Schaffranek (Vienna University of Technologie, Austria) will present a hand-on introduction to his own program 'SpiderWeb' in the combination with a 3d CAD Program and a visual algorithmic editor. We think that this would enable an in-depth discussion about the possibilities of implementing space syntax analysis in the Rhinoceros and Grasshopper environments and would allow the professional audience to understand and comment on the differences between SpiderWeb and DepthmapX.
